China Introduces Flushability Standard

A new standard for wet wipes regarding flushability has been launched by the China Nonwovens and Industrial Textiles Association (CNITA). This standard clearly specifies the raw materials, classification, labeling, technical requirements, quality indicators, test methods, inspection rules, packaging, transportation and storage of wet wipes. According to the flushability requirements, wet wipes products are divided into two categories: flushable and non-flushable. Flushable wet toilet paper can be marked with text or pictures on the packaging to indicate its flushability, while non-flushable wet wipes should be clearly marked “Do not throw into the toilet” in a conspicuous place on the packaging.

“The release of this standard marks a new stage in the development of China’s wet wipes industry. The standard will encourage manufacturers to increase R&D investment, improve product quality, guide the industry towards standardization, and increase consumer confidence and satisfaction with wet wipes. The implementation of this standard will promote the further development of flushable and degradable nonwoven materials in China. It is believed that consumers will enjoy a healthier, safer, more convenient, more comfortable and more environmentally friendly experience because of this standard,” said Li Guimei, president of CNITA.

The standards were released during CINTE at a press conference and expected to promote the development and innovation in China’s wet wipes market.
